The Idea - Discover Music
With innumerable music apps available in the market, there is no dearth of options for music-lovers. However, it might not always be easy for the user to explore different genres and find varied and interesting artists to listen to.

How do we create a way for users to discover music that feels natural to them?
My Contributions
The project started with business competitive analysis of comparing features provided by the leading music apps in the market, followed by quantitative and qualitative UX research methods i.e online surveys, user interviews and online articles regarding the music industry and independent artists.

The resulting data was then analysed through Affinity diagram, How-Might-We statements and a Jobs-To-Be-Done statement which aided me in reaching a Problem Statement, User personas and User Journey Map.

With the users motivations and frustrations understood, I moved on to the UI design with Moodboard, Brand Attributes and Design System.

The project ends with a high fidelity prototype, usability testing and plans for further iterations.

What do users want?
Data from UX Research - User Interviews and surveys

All the respondents use online streaming to listen to music. Youtube and Spotify ranked the highest in streaming apps.

85% - Satisfied with the online streaming apps
55% - Premium subscribers
80% - open to a dedicated platform for discovering new music

Over 60% of users rely on recommendations from friends and online music forums

"If I listen to one list, I only get the same genre recommended and it is hard to find something else that I could like because I do not know where to look for it"

“A less punishing ad regime for those that do not have subscriptions”

How-Might-We Benefit
The Users

A list of artists and songs on a weekly basis curated by editors (think radio jockeys of yester years) so that users can discover varied genres of music.

Introducing a sense of community through Findie by introducing a friends feature with options to add friends, follow their playlists and browse through their listening history.

Better track suggestions is an important need for most users. Songs / Artists can be recommended based on the genres and artists that the users currently like. We will also be recommending artists who might be complementary to the ones users prefer to aid in discovering new music. There will also be an option to remove an artist/song from their library.

The Artists

There are multiple apps in the market currently for artists to showcase their talent.

However, established artists and record companies have the advantage of being able to grab users’ attention with marketing and advertising their music on all the major platforms.

What we are trying to achieve with this platform is to create a space for new and independent artists to be able to reach their listeners and promote their music.

The most effective way would be to design this as a mobile app for continued access to users. Going ahead, the platform will also aid artists in album and concert ticket sales.

The Business

A subscription model would be beneficial from a business point of view. Another way would be to have an artist subscription with some features available only for paid customers (user and artist profiles).

Jobs-To-Be-Done Statement

The Main Job-to-be-done is to discover new artists and their music

An important functional aspect would be to browse through artist profiles and different genres of Music

A related emotional/personal job is to feel good/connected while listening to the music and learn about the artists.

A related emotional/social job is to be able to share playlists/tracklists and recommendations with friends

Problem Statement

Jerry needs an interactive online platform on which he can discover new artists so that he may explore different genres of music that would match his preferences.

The Solution
The analysis part of design illustrates all the possible solutions that can be developed as part of the product design.
